Still Have Questions?
We'd love to hear from you. Reach out anytime or book a free consultation and come see the gym for yourself.
Do I need any experience to join?
Not at all. Our women’s Muay Thai classes in Melbourne are beginner friendly and designed for all fitness and experience levels. Many of our members start with zero Muay Thai, boxing, or martial arts experience.
What is Muay Thai 101?
Muay Thai 101 is our beginner focused Muay Thai class designed for women who are completely new to training. Each class focuses on one technique at a slower pace while building strong fundamentals, fitness, confidence, and correct Muay Thai technique.
Are your coaches female?
Yes. Most of our Muay Thai coaches are female and understand how to create a supportive, empowering, and welcoming environment for women of all ages, fitness levels, and experience.
Do you offer trial or casual classes?
Yes. We offer a casual Muay Thai class pass for $35 so you can try a session without any lock in contracts or long term commitment.
What should I bring to my first class?
Just bring comfortable workout clothes, a water bottle, and a towel. If you already have boxing gloves or hand wraps, feel free to bring them. If not, our team can help you get started with beginner friendly Muay Thai gear.
What should I wear?
Wear activewear or gym clothes you feel comfortable moving in. Most members wear leggings, shorts, a singlet, or oversized tee for training.
Do I need to be fit before starting?
No. Fitness comes with consistency and training. Everyone starts somewhere, and our beginner friendly Muay Thai classes are designed to help you build confidence, fitness, strength, and conditioning at your own pace.
Will I get punched or spar on my first class?
Definitely not. Beginners focus on learning Muay Thai techniques, movement, cardio, and fitness first. Sparring is always optional and only introduced when you feel ready and confident.
Is Muay Thai good for weight loss?
Yes. Muay Thai is one of the best full body workouts for improving fitness, burning calories, building strength, increasing endurance, and supporting healthy weight loss. Many members also train for stress relief, confidence, and mental wellbeing.
What age can join your classes?
We welcome women of all ages and fitness levels. We also offer kids Muay Thai classes in Melbourne for children aged 5 to 12.
How long are the classes?
Most Muay Thai and fitness classes run for 45 to 60 minutes depending on the session type.
Can beginners join any class?
We recommend starting with Muay Thai 101 or our beginner friendly classes before progressing into all levels sessions.
How often should I train as a beginner?
We usually recommend starting with 2 to 3 Muay Thai sessions per week to build fitness, consistency, confidence, and technique.
Do I need to book classes in advance?
Yes. We recommend booking your Muay Thai classes through our online booking system to secure your spot, especially during busy evening sessions.
Do you offer private training?
Yes. We offer one on one Muay Thai personal training sessions for beginners, fitness goals, technique development, weight loss, and fight preparation.
Can I train just for fitness and not fight?
Absolutely. Most of our members train for fitness, confidence, stress relief, self discipline, and personal growth rather than competition or fighting.
What makes your gym different?
We focus on creating a positive, empowering, and supportive women’s only Muay Thai community in Melbourne. Our goal is to help women feel stronger, healthier, more confident, and supported both physically and mentally.
Am I too old to start Muay Thai?
Absolutely not. We have women of all ages and fitness levels starting Muay Thai later in life. Whether you are in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, or beyond, Muay Thai training can be adapted to suit your pace, goals, and experience level.
Our beginner friendly classes focus on learning fundamentals in a supportive and non intimidating environment, so you never need to feel pressured to keep up with anyone else. Many of our members start training for fitness, confidence, weight loss, stress relief, or simply to try something new and challenge themselves.
Is JS Muay Thai really women-only?
Yes, 100%. JS Muay Thai is Melbourne's first women-only Muay Thai gym. Our entire space — training floor, change rooms, showers, and community areas — is exclusively for women. This is intentional: we've built an environment where you can focus on learning, push yourself hard, and feel completely at ease doing it.
How do I get started?
The best first step is to book a free consultation with us. It's a no-pressure conversation where we can learn about your goals, show you around the gym, and help you find the right membership or program. You can book directly through our website.
I'm not fit enough to start yet — should I get fit first?
No! This is one of the most common things we hear, and we want to put it to rest. You don't need to be fit to start — training here is how you get fit. Our coaches are experienced at working with all levels and will never make you feel out of place. Just show up, and we'll take care of the rest.
What types of classes do you offer?
We offer a wide range of classes to support your whole fitness journey, including Muay Thai, Boxing, HIIT, Strength Training, and Mobility & Stretch. Classes run mornings, lunch, and evenings, seven days a week — so there's always something that fits your schedule.
What happens in a typical Muay Thai class?
Classes are led by experienced coaches and typically include bag work, pad work, and skill drills. As you progress, you'll have the opportunity to practice sparring and refine defensive techniques, all within a cardio-intensive session. Safety and correct form are always a priority, and our coaches place strong emphasis on partnership skills and injury prevention.
What is the 8-Week Muay Thai 101 Course?
This is our structured beginner program, designed for women who are new to Muay Thai or want to solidify the fundamentals. Over eight weeks, you'll learn authentic technique — stance, strikes, defence, and footwork — in a small-group format with progressive, step-by-step guidance. No experience needed; just energy and commitment.
Can I freeze my membership?
Yes. Gold and Silver members can freeze their membership for up to 8 weeks per year at no charge. Bronze members receive up to 2 weeks of free freeze annually. This is great for holidays, illness, or busy life periods.
Is there a cancellation fee?
Bronze membership has no cancellation fee and no minimum term — you can stop anytime. Gold and Silver memberships have minimum terms of 12 and 6 months respectively.
What makes JS Muay Thai different from a regular gym?
A few things stand out. First, it's women-only — that changes the atmosphere completely. Second, it was founded and is led by professional female fighters who have translated their competitive knowledge into coaching. Third, the community here is genuinely tight-knit: members consistently describe it as a second home. And finally, the training is real Muay Thai — not a watered-down fitness class with a Thai kickboxing label on it.
Who are the coaches?
JS Muay Thai was founded by two professional female fighters, Joanne La and Som Rangkla. Both bring deep competitive experience and genuinely different fighting styles — Jo is known for her aggressive style, while Som brings a long-limbed, highly technical approach. This means the coaching adapts to your body type and learning style, not the other way around. Our wider coaching team is equally experienced and approachable.
Where is JS Muay Thai located?
We're based at 23 Ann Street, Footscray VIC 3011 — conveniently located in Melbourne's inner west.
